Secret Agent Society (SAS) is an award winning, breakthrough program for social and emotional skills development.

 

The program was created by Australian clinical psychologist and Asperger’s expert Dr Renae Beaumont and is regarded as one of the most successful programs of its kind in the world.

 

A university randomised, controlled trial  found the social skills of 76 per cent of children with Asperger’s Syndrome improved from being significantly impaired to within the range of typically developing children after doing SAS.

"Sessions feel like fun not therapy!"

SAS includes child group sessions, parent workshops, teacher tip sheets, home missions, using a multi-level computer game and a system to reward and monitor progress at home and school.

SAS gives children step-by-step examples of how to make and keep friends, cope with bullying and deal with emotions such as anxiety and anger.

SAS features an animated 'secret agent' computer game, Helpful Thought Missile action game, Challenger board game and spy gadgets like Secret Message Transmission Devices (Walkie Talkies) to captivate kids while the learn new social and emotional skills in a fun way.

Is the program evidence-based?

 

YES! 

One university randomised controlled trial found 76 percent of children with Asperger's Syndrome, who had clinically significant delays in social-emotional functioning, improved to displaying these skills in the range of typically developing children on a parent-report measure (Beaumont & Sofronoff, 2008)

Can I use my child's NDIS funding to pay for the program?
 

YES! 

Social Skills Superheroes is registered to provide supports for NDIS participants. NDIS participants with appropriate available funding will have no out-of-pocket expenses. All program resources including rewards and weekly materials are covered.

How much does the SAS program cost?

The program cost is calculated based on the pricing guidelines issued by the NDIS. If your child is an NDIS participant with appropriate available funding you will have no out-of-pocket costs.

As a parent, how can I become involved?

 

Parents are an integral part of the program. You are the expert on your child and your insights and goals for them are a fundamental part of the process of us understanding and facilitating your child's growth. You are included through an initial intake and assessment process followed by a 2 hour parent meeting and then weekly 30 minute sessions following each of your child's group sessions. You will assist your child in weekly home missions and be provided with a detailed parent workbook and support along the way. After the weekly part of the program has finished, we will follow-up on your child's progress at 3 months and then 6 months. Along with extended family members, you will be invited to celebrate your family's achievements at your child's graduation ceremony and party that concludes our program. This is usually a special time for families.

Why do you encourage parents to become involved?
 

We know that family involvement is pivotal to the generalisation of skills across environments. This means you are a key player in helping us continue to grow your child's skills at home, at school as well as during group sessions.

Families bring with them their valuable experiences on what interests and motivates their child and can help us by providing feedback on what works and what's not working. In addition being involved means you can learn new skills and ideas on how to tackle problems you might not be making much head way with.

What about when my child is at school?
 

Schools are another key part of the program and receive resources and support to help 'cadets' develop and practice new skills. The level of support across school and home is why SAS is so successful. With your permission, we will contact your child's school and liaise with their teacher. If possible, we will arrange to observe your child in the school environment as part of our initial assessment. 

Will this program be suitable for my child?

SAS was originally designed for 8 to 12 year-olds with high functioning Autism (Asperger's Syndrome). It has since been found to be successful for a much broader range of school aged children with social and emotional challenges including, but not limited to those with intellectual disability and ADHD. 

Our professionals will take care to place your child in a group that compliments your child's individual needs, interests and age. Feel free to talk to us about your concerns and preferences and so we can find the best fit for your child. 

My child has sensory issues and doesn't usually do well in group situations?

We understand children with sensory issues and will work with you to understand your child's particular sensory needs. We provide fidget toys, movement activities involving heavy work to assist sensory integration, and provide chill-out areas for when children need some space or time to themselves. Our team Director, Cynthia Hyde, has a special interest in sensory strategies for getting children into the zone for learning, and sensory needs are incorporated into all programs.

My child doesn't like to sit. I'm worried two hours is too long for each session.

Our programs are fast paced and filled with engaging activities. Sessions encourage interaction, participation, and movement. Research shows most kids love the SAS program and stay engaged for the length of the sessions. 

I'm not sure if my child will cooperate?
 

We are trained and experienced in working with children who present with challenging behaviour. Actually, we tend to have a soft spot towards them, and look forward to finding out what makes your child tick, so we can develop strategies to minimise problematic behaviours and encourage cooperation. 

What is the time commitment?
 

As busy parents we understand the constant pressure of trying to balance conflicting priorties and the needs of different family members.  We offer programs that are evidence based and proven to make a difference in improving your child's social skills, so you can feel confident your time is being well spent. We offer these programs in the most time effcient and flexible manner possible. For the main part of the program, the weekly session time runs for two hours. Families who spend time at home practicising skills from the program get the best results. We recommend you spend at least twenty minutes, three times per week playing the computer game and doing 'home missions.'

My child hates going to therapy?

SAS is unlike your usual therapy sessions. In groups, 'cadets' will engage in role play, interactive games and even occasionally shoot 'helpful thought missiles,' with a secret agent issued gadet and foam projectiles. We're happy to talk through any concerns or issues you have had with past experiences and explain how this program is likley to differ. 


We've tried so many therapies in the past? How is this any different?

 

We know what it feels like to search for something that will make a difference and to then feel deflated when things don't go the way we'd hoped. We (as parents of kids with ASD ourselves) have done the training, read the research and seen first hand how kids not only love this program but really grow and develop new skills from it.
